International trade and tourism are important aspects of Santa Cruz County‘s economy. Nogales — the county’s largest city — serves as a major gateway between the U.S. and Mexico.
According to research by the University of Arizona (UofA), Mexican visitors account for 23.6 percent of all jobs in the county. According to the Arizona-Mexico Commission, 60 percent of all winter produce consumed in the U.S. and Canada passes through and is processed in Nogales.
Other important industries are wholesale trade, transportation and warehousing in support of international trade, and services that support the existing population (government, retail trade, and health care and social assistance). Santa Cruz is Arizona‘s smallest county and 37.5 percent of land is privately owned.
