On Nov. 16, the U.S. Commercial Service and UPS will be accompanying companies from Arizona to an Expo hosted at the Masterlock facility in Nogales, Sonora, where over 35 maquilas will be present.
In light of higher wages and longer lead times in places such as China, the maquilas are keen on sourcing locally, quickly, and efficiently from Arizona.
In contrast to many places around the world, recent economic news has characterized the maquila industry in Mexico as growing and prosperous.
Thanks to State Department officials at the Consulate, secure transportation will be provided to and from the Arizona side of the border.
The agenda for the meeting includes:
10 a.m.: Meet in Safeway parking lot in Nogales, Arizona.
10:15: Cross border and conduct a short tour en route to Expo.
10:45: Arrive at Expo, brief orientation by Consular officers in hospitality room.
11:00: Meet and greet at Expo/one-on-one meetings.
12:30 p.m.: Working lunch for all of the Arizona Suppliers in the hospitality room:
*Presentation by Juan Cordero, Economic Development, State of Sonora.
*Open discussion with Consulate officials about security and living situation on the border.
1:30: Meet and greet at Expo/one-on-one meetings.
3:00: Arizona suppliers depart expo, short tour of Nogales downtown en route to border.
3:30: Drop off Arizona suppliers back at Safeway.
